Frequently Asked Questions

What size plants do you ship?

Our plants are grown in a variety of ways here at the nursery. We have a large amount of field stock as well as containerized plant material. The plants we ship to our mail order customers are the same plants that our walk-in retail customers choose from. We do not ship seedling size plants, we guarantee all of our perennials are at least two years old. Our container stock is grown in either a two quart container (5 inch square), or a tree band (3.5 inch square). Naturally the size of each plant depends on the nature of its growth habit and dormancy cycle.

How are your plants shipped?

Once we pull together an order for shipping we follow a process for each order. For containerized material, the plants are removed from the pots and the rootball is trimmed down. The plant is then placed on moist sphagnum moss and each plant is wrapped up individually in brown kraft paper, held together with a rubber band and the plant tag is attached. Plants that come from our field are dug the day of shipping, and placed on paper with sphagnum moss in the same fashion. If ordering a plant in late spring or in the fall the foliage may be pruned back for shipping purposes. In the case of some wildflowers or delicate plants, they may remain in their container for shipping. Also, depending on certain state restrictions some perennials my arrive pre-dipped in a pesticide solution as required by law to prevent possible spread of the Japanese Beetle. All International shipments are sent bare-root. Except for HI and AK, all packages are sent via UPS, either ground shipping for East of the Mississippi, or 3-day select for West of the Mississippi. Hawaii and Alaska orders are shipped US Postal Service. Other shipping options via UPS may be arranged for an additional fee.

Why am I charged when I place my order?

Although we have a wide selection of perennials here at the nursery, we have a limited quantity of each plant. Due to the perishable nature of our product and the fickle Maine weather, we remove your plants from our inventory when you order. This ensures that your plants will be available to ship on the date in your confirmation letter. As we prioritize our orders on a first come first serve basis we do charge for the order when it is placed. If we have any crop failures that affect your order we will either backorder or refund your account on your ship date.
